Legacy Lesson Options
Piano
Piano lessons at Legacy are a combination of purpose and playfulness. As I design each student’s curriculum, I am careful to balance structured practice in technique, lesson books, and music theory with more creative practice in improvisation, composition, and student-chosen repertoire. Teenage and adult students typically know what they want to achieve through lessons, so often I choose repertoire which fits their preferences. With younger students I most frequently use the “Succeeding at the Piano Series” and “Wunderkeys” but am also familiar with teaching from other common piano method series.
As I work with each student, we begin to discover his or her preferences and musical strengths. As the student-teacher partnership develops, we begin to make and achieve goals specific to the student’s musical superpowers and interests. For example, some of my students show natural talent for composition, hymn playing, sight reading, classical performance, pop music performance, memorization, and improvisation. I welcome transfer students and brand-new beginners to give piano lessons a try at Legacy Musical Arts.
Needed Equipment:
Piano (tuned and in good condition) or Keyboard (preferably full-sized, with an attached music stand)
Piano Bench
“Our children look forward to their lessons because Ms. Jessica makes them fun, allows them to learn songs that interest them and challenges them in interactive ways.”
Preschool Piano
Preschool piano lessons at Legacy are full of fun and joy! Pre-kindergarten students (ages 2-5) are at the perfect age to begin learning about music and the piano. This new lesson option is a busy and engaging opportunity for your little one who shows an interest in music. During a preschool piano lesson we sing, play finger games, explore musical movements, play the piano, learn numbers, learn musical notation, and more. Because little ones have short attention spans, I keep the lessons moving with different activities and pace the instruction based on the student’s mood and interest. I’m not sure who has more fun - my preschool student or me!
Needed Equipment:
Keyboard (half or full-sized)
“Ms. Jessica’s studio is very inviting. I can watch and learn with Elizabeth or I can step aside and let her do the lesson. The environment is flexible and Ms. Jessica does a great job of including parents if they desire.
I wasn’t sure how Elizabeth would do since she just turned 4 but children are already so creative! They just need someone to push them and help them explore that creativity. Ms. Jessica does just that! I would highly recommend!”
Guitar
Guitar lessons at Legacy Musical Arts are great for students with little to no musical background, as well as students who have some experience. The guitar is a very versatile instrument and can be so rewarding to play. Our guitar students learn proper playing technique, common chords, tablature, music theory, and a variety of songs from different genres. We use the Hal Leonard beginning guitar method books as well as a collection of supplementary books. Our instructor, Mr. Kleiner, structures lessons to meet the needs and skills of each student. This program is primarily for acoustic guitar, and we recommend guitar lessons for students of 8 years and older.

Harp
Harp lessons at Legacy are perfect for a student who already has a proficient level of musical training and wants to learn a rare and beautiful instrument. Harps have such a rich and calming tone, that even beginning harpists can sound great practicing the basics. Students interested in playing the harp must have at least two years of experience playing the piano and taking private lessons with a teacher. Much of harp instruction for the first few years focuses on learning the hand position and technique. Once students have mastered the technique, they will be given more opportunity to choose music that suits their personal preferences and can begin more creative projects.
Harps come in a range of sizes and styles, and also vary greatly in price. New beginner harps can range anywhere from $900-6,000, while professional orchestral harps cost $10,000 and up. There are several rental and rent-to-own options available which are practical for student harpists just starting out. Legacy may have instruments available for rent, so please contact me for more details.
If you or your student are interested in harp lessons and have more questions, please contact me and we can schedule a time to chat.
Equipment needed:

Ukulele
Ukulele lessons at Legacy are fun and flexible. Students start off with a beginner book to learn instrument care, music theory basics, hand position and technique, common chords, basic strumming patterns, and some simple songs. Beginning ukulele lessons involve almost as much singing as playing the instrument, so students will not only improve instrumental skills but vocal skills as well. Ukulele students will also have opportunities to choose songs which they want to learn as challenges and recital pieces. These lessons are very “student-centered” and I see both skill improvement and increased confidence in my ukulele students throughout the year.
Depending on the student and his or her goals, ukulele lessons might be completed in a year or they might be completed in several years. This instrument is extremely accessible for students young and old (ages 6 and up!) The relatively low cost (starting at $50) makes it a great instrument to try.
Equipment needed:
Ukulele (I can make recommendations for a quality instrument)
